The respiratory system is the only system in the body that is both automatic and autonomic. Which means we don’t have to consciously think about breathing and we can consciously think about breathing. And, that breath affects every other part of our system! It can wake us up, calm us down, help us digest food, process our emotions, circulate our blood, and so on!
"That Breath You Just Took ... That's A Gift."
- Rob Bell
Breath is the great equalizer.
Everyone has breath. It doesn’t matter what language you speak, your race, your age, your gender, your religion … everyone has breath. And every child, every family, and every person - deserves to know how to use it.
As we enter Vata Season (or Autumn), AIR is the element.
You may feel spacey - too many ideas to act on.
You may feel restless, rushed, and anxious in recognition that change is coming.
I feel it too.
The apples get ready to pick, the comfy sweaters come out, the temperature drops, and the leaves on the trees are a riot of color. It’s like Mother Nature takes a beautiful sip of air in, and then a giant exhale.
She cues us to wrap up projects in all their glory and then let go. Gather your harvest proudly and in equal measure release what didn’t come to be this season so we can enter winter empty and receptive.
The gift of this season is to get organized and consolidate this spinning energy with grounding practices (time in nature, breathwork, soup with root veggies) so we can enter winter with a lighter load.
What are you preparing to release?
SELF CARE TOOLKIT
Breathe of Fire
A continuous, rapid breath done through the nose. Imagine a pumping at the navel like you’re trying to snuff out a candle or fog up a mirror. It can also be done through the mouth (tongue out) as if you’re panting like a dog.
1-3 minutes.
Benefits: Increases the metabolism; rejuvenating and energizing practice; purifies blood and releases deposits from lungs; increases lung capacity.
